wind mobile Canada telecom market

Wow, Canada is finally waking up my great country! and they want to open up the telcom market to foreign investors. This is good news, it will be more competition here.

We should not jump into the conclusion, that all US carriers will jump onto the band wagon and open their operations here.

The US wireless market is very competitive right now, and in my opinion they would rather buy each other out, instead of entering a foreign market. The good news is the major Canadian players like

  • Rogers
  • Telus
  • Bell

will definitely have to adopt to the competition that is going to come from Wind, Mobilicity etc. If you talk to Rogers their excuse is that those networks are very bad! and that the so called unlimited data plan by Wind mobile is really capped as you reach 5Gigs (so i picked up the phone called Wind to really find out more.)

So basically i talked to Mashood at Wind Mobile, and he told me that the speeds after 5gb will slow down, they also allow tethering (which is cool, no restrictions on tethering) so after all it's not that great at all (but still great)

Wind also told me they are putting up 50 towers (I think this is highly over exaggerated) a month and expanding GTA area. Their plans in recent months is enter into Ottawa area.

My honest opinion is that this new company, will be successful in Canada. For now they will not have a huge customer base due to coverage. In my opinion it's kind of hard to compete with someone like Rogers, Bell, and Telus that build their infrastructure already.

Not to mention the huge client base they have also build, the only reason i am not on Wind yet is because of coverage, I travel in Ontario and I need that coverage

So getting back, with more stuff on Wind Scott Waller (CIO) and Chris Robbins have left Wind Mobile. Offering the $150 to credit also for customers transferring over was highly criticized by telecom consultancy Seaboard Group.

Criticism is one thing, but Wind is here for now on the customers side let's see if Wind survives as a new entrant into the wireless market. I am in high hopes they don't sell out to Bell, Rogers, or Telus. In this case all the executivies will take a nice pay out and pack their bags and big red will dominate once again.

Buy outs can be good and bad for example the Rogers, Fido buy out is not that bad after all. Fido has remained unique from Rogers but for example the "Unlimited City Fido" plan offered back when Fido was Fido is gone.

Forget about it!

You will get only 2000 minutes, on the City Fido plan.
