Bell has been quiet for a while, but now has decided to launch a new service called Bell Fibe. Bell has made a move into a HSPA network this November 2009 in the wireless industry and now is taking a leap into internet services.

Newly developed buildings should have FTTB (Fiber to the building), and newly developed suburbs will have FTTH (Fiber to the home)

Bell is claiming in the future it will bring 100mbps downlink and 20mbps uplink. The initial service rollout will begin in Quebec City and eventully roll out to Ontario and Quebec specifically,

Toronto

Ottawa

Now Bell Fibe is a combination of fiber and VDSL2, which can achieve speeds 6mbps - 25mbps downstream, which will be able to compete with it's rivals like Rogers and Cogeco cable which provide their internet access through a coaxial line.

Don't get happy, because even at these high speeds the cap is still at 75GB so it defeats the purpose of being so fast. I think until these caps are removed the whole purpose of this huge network update is useless since i can stream video fine and download content at 5mbps.

Fibe is active today as we speak in Montreal and Greater Toronto Area but if you live in a older house or an older sub-division forget about Fibe, you are not covered!. Bell claims to double the homes covered in 2010 and it planning to launch IPTV soon.

IPTV needs a minimum of 5mbps to stream, but don't forget multiple Internet users in your household or multiple IPTV streams simultaneously the speed would have to be around 25mbps-50mbps. (this is the direction bell is trying to move into.)

Right now this is the break down of Bell Fibe:

Upload speed: up to 1 Mbps

Internet usage: 50 GB of bandwidth per month

Fibe 16

Fibe 25

Download speed: up to 16 Mbps1

Upload speed: up to 1 Mbps

Internet usage: 75 GB of bandwidth per month

Faster download speeds - up to 25 Mbps.1

Fastest upload speeds in the market - up to 7 Mbps

Internet usage: 75 GB of bandwidth per month

What really concerns me is Fibe 6, 25GB per month what are you going to do with that download the Redhat distro a few times?. I would say these services might be fast but still pricey, right now other ADSL providers are offering packages like 200GB or Unlimited below the $40 dollar mark (but essentially they are also using the Bell network, and just reselling).

One of the popular resellers for bell right now is: TekSavvy

The interesting part is to see if Bell will allow these smaller ISP's to resell their Fibe services.
