The so called wireless phase 11 technology allows wireless carriers to track the altitude and longitude on a map of a 911 call. I would assume this is not only a 911 call, this could be used to track anyone within 300 meters of the call.

Before calls could only be tracked to the nearest cellphone tower the user made a call from, now this technology is getting very close approximately 300 meters from the cell phone user.

People might think this technology is great, I agree but on the opposite side of the table I would say it is good if it's only used for tracking emergency calls. I wouldn't say it is good when people are going to be tracked for calls that are not 911 specific.

The technology was developed by a BC company called E-Comm. This technology is not an alternative for a live person in danger to tell 911 where they are exactly.

Right now VoIP calls can only be tracked to the location of the ISP, not the physical house the call is coming from. CRTC is looking into how to change that.

I assume there would be some changes in the actual hardware that would have a location registered on each physical unit (DSL,Cable Modem) with the isp. This information could then be passed onto 911, if a 911 call is placed from our computer using the VoIP protocol. (This is just an idea, I am not a 911 expert :])

The CRTC gave cell phone operators until February to upgrade to 9111 Phase 11.
